Turn the late-season garden into a constellation of gold with Rudbeckia triloba! Commonly called brown-eyed Susan, this exuberant North American wildflower carries clouds of small golden daisies, each centered with a dark chocolate-brown eye, on an open tracery of much-branched stems. The flowers seem to sparkle above the planting from summer into fall, creating a buoyant meadow effect just when many borders begin to lose momentum. Bees and butterflies bring even more life to the display, while the warm color glows beautifully in the slanting autumn light.Usually grown as a biennial or short-lived perennial, it reaches about 3–5 feet tall and fits naturally into cottage gardens, meadow-style plantings, mixed borders, and relaxed cutting gardens. Its multitude of smaller flowers gives it a lighter, airier character than the larger-flowered Rudbeckia hirta. Thread it among asters, grasses, salvias, and late-blooming perennials, or cut branching stems for cheerful, informal bouquets.Grow in full sun or light part sun with average, well-drained soil and regular water. Plants adapt to a range of soils and may reseed readily where happy. Remove seedheads to limit volunteers, or leave selected stems to mature and continue the planting.Explore more plants for cutting.
